Apple in crisis: antennagate

Apple Iphone4 Antennagate Issue

Apple Iphone4 Antennagate Issue
Apple appears to be panicking in its reaction to the widely-reported antenna issue plaguing most iPhone 4s -- in its latest maneuver to attempt to ‘unthink’ the problem, company moderators appeared to delete threads which referred to yesterday’s Consumer Reports findings -- only to change their mind and open these discussions again a few hours later. Quick recap: Consumer Reports rates the iPhone as being the best around, but can’t recommend it because Apple hasn’t yet made any reassurances concerning the antenna problem.

TUAW notes that Apple forum mods deleted Apple Support Forum threads referring to the Consumer Reports declaration on multiple occasions.

“Every post that I saw listed in a Google search of Apple's discussion boards led to the same result: "Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category,” writes TJ Luoma.

Since then these posts have been made available once again, suggesting Apple’s company policy on this matter remains unfixed.

As the only promise we’ve seen from Apple has been one to address a signal strength indicator issue, I’d like to observe that the company’s timorous reaction to dissent likely suggests there is no available fix for the antenna issue, other than using a case, duct tape, nail varnish or some other alternative to prevent bridging the antenna gap.

Apple’s previous statement on this matter has been to characterize annoyances like these as perfectly normal, and to advise users to ‘hold different’.

I suspect that’s all we’re going to hear on this, despite that the holdage problem is becoming an urban myth, popping up on radio and TV in completely unrelated usage. Apple will ultimately continue to advise users to get a case and ‘hold different’.

Though there’s a chance it may ramp up its testing of prototypes not kept in cases in future.
